Trained as a mechanical engineer, Don worked in research and development for 45 years. Today, he and his wife reside in Upton, Massachusetts.
In the mid-nineties, Don started taking night courses in fine woodworking at the Worcester Center for Crafts in Worcester, MA, and it was there that he got hooked on woodturning. Woodturning by hand, in which the artisan manually controls the cutting tool over the lathe-driven spinning wood, was an industrial skill until the early part of the twentieth century. More recently it has been reborn as an art-form. The ability to transform a rough log into an object of function and beauty held a special appeal for Don.
In 2002 Don left high-tech to become a full-time artist woodturner, selling at shows and galleries in the Boston area. Today he divides his time between family, woodturning, engineering, and various outdoor pursuits.
